I have an Eshopps RS-75 reef sump and I will not recommend there products to anyone. I've washed my filter socks reinstalled them and they overflow immediately. This tank has drained me of money. I love it but now I can't afford a bigger and better sump that will work for my tank. I hope everything will survive with no filter for a few months. I guess we'll see. Thanks Eshopps.

That sounds odd, I have an RS-100 by eShopps and its been great for me. I change my filter sock once a week and I only use 200 micron socks. I have never had my filter sock even come close to overflowing, even when I've let it go for 2 weeks+.

    - What type of socks are you using
    - What is your return pump
    - Is your overflow an HOB or is your tank drilled

BTW welcome to 3reef, I would post a detailed issue of your problem prior to negatives on the company, it may not be the sump that is the problem. It seems the socks are the issue if you're having an overflow immediately.

I'm in my 18th year of reefing now and I've never used filter socks on any of my tanks.
Skimmers remove a lot of zooplankton but filter socks remove even more and I prefer to keep my zooplankton up in my tanks.
What are you trying to remove with the filter socks?

I use socks mainly to prevent bubbles popping and throwing salt everywhere in my stand. I change them when they start to overflow. I clean them by soaking them in bleach for a few days, ro/di for a few days, then hang dry for a few days. I need to replace all of my socks once every few months.

    What's a filter sock? LOL!

Just kidding, but I don't use them. Only if I do sand work, tell put it over my pump intake to do a little polish work. Perhaps a couple of hours top.

So I have a question... If you dont use filter socks what is the best way to keep the particles floating around in the tank? I have lots and lots floating around I dont know if they are good or bad... I do know that its kinda an eye sore and I have seen peoples tanks that are crystal clear... So my question is dosent a HOB filter kinda do the same thing but just not to the amount of a filter sock? Just asking questions is all and trying to have the most amazing tank that i can have...

Is anyone worried about washing them in their regular tap water? Overtime isnt a possibility to have heavy metals and god knows what else build up in the sock?

Well, my reef tanks have return pumps and power heads and live rock, but no mechanical or chemical filtration beyond that live rock.
I used to use skimmers but I no longer do that either.
For me, when I see zooplankton floating in the tank, I feel I'm succeeding in providing for my livestock be they fish or corals or ?.
Different people have different ideas on what constitutes an "amazing tank"
