How often do you need/should change out the mud in a refugium? Is there a time frame or are there "signs" that will let you know when to change it out? Luna

Why would you need to change it? Is it dirty? If the flow is not too intense, you should have all the critters still in the mud. If it's dirty maybe just vacuum out lightly?

I'm there for ya, Luna--unfortunately I don't know about this. I'm getting ready to throw some sand in the new fuge, but I've never used mud.

Just bumping for ya. . I'm keeping my eye on this one.

If its Miracle mud they have or used to have in some very very very small print on the label about when it was supposed to become exhausted , But I've used it and it went as long as a sand fuge did , Its nothing more then Alkaline clay quarried in Ga Ms and Ala. It helps with buffering a bit if you feel the stuff is wearing out ? Just get some kitty litter the cheap no frills Ga. Stuff its the bases of the magic mud and offers the very same buffering capacity . I always laid a inch of the litter in first for my base when I build a plenum system and I found it also prolonged the life and improved the NNR abilities of a Deep sand bed . More so then just different grades of sand

My trusted LFS said that it should be replaced every year or so. I'm about to install a new wet/dry---sump---refugium combo tank and I bought Fiji Refugium Mud and was just wondering about the mud. I Just wanted to get a census on the topic. Luna
