LOL come one guys, everyone chill. Yes filtration is important PERIOD. Is it 100% necessary on a pico? not 100% I personally say you should have a filter, but thats me. you know why now lol, but its your call, the original question about filters was if your internal filter would work, to which I said yes, but its going to be a pain in the ass to clean once you have your rock work done. so I said to go with a small HOB, the smallest you can find haha. good luck I look forward to seeing what you do with that little tank!

Totally agreed. I once had a 29g softies tank with no filter, skimmer or sump. A 10% weekly WC kept everything in check. It would most definitely be easier for smaller tanks where WCs become quite miniscule.

sorry to confuse you, we all are just trying to give you what we all think is the best advice. its really all up to you. your good either way theres benefits to both sides. i just happen to be a follower of the no filter side.

also the internal filter would lack the benefits many of thesepeople mentioned when it comes to filters, carbon, more water volume, and so on. really i think it would just take up space in the tank.

I get where you are coming from chelsea, my lfs has a 10g nano, no filters just the LR and powerhead, but 10-50% weekly wc. the nice thing as said about having a small hob filter, is you can hid your heater in it, as well as throw some chemi pure or something in it, with less electronics and what not in the display, its more appealing. but like said its not 100% necessary, but I still ove the idea of having a filter! ;)

its good to see this ending on a fairly good note, i guess well just agree to disagree like i have said. the op was actually talking of the in tank filter. which would lack all the benefits you spoke of. so i think if he doesnt have a hob filter it would be best to not do the in tank filter it would displace enough water to have a negative effect i would think.

AS we suggested, a hob to hide stuff in so its not filling up the small tank, insert some chaeto, lr, pods etc!

    Just a thought!

also just because all of you have been messing with me about an airstone! i hope you realize that in a tank this size it is probably the best piece of equipment to keep the water movement. you cant exactly fit a powerhead inside a tank like that. the outtake to a small out of tank filter would have a small amount of flow. the air stone would just supplement it enough.
