i know i am sick of the standard short stand and bending down to look at fish so my stands are about 1.4m high with the tanks on top of them

as dingo said , if your building your own, make it to your preference for viewing and maintenance. my stands 30 inches tall, and tank 24 tall. but for me it all works perfectly for both. im 6'3 , so tall enough to do all maintenance easily. also have to take into account what your gonna keep below if you go sump and skimmer. need the clearances there.

I personally built my own stand because I needed more room for my tall sump. Its all a matter of what you think looks good and what your system requires.
I love the look of my taller stand. However, Its not very convenient for me because Im very short. I have a little stool I have to stand on if I need to reach the bottom.

My stand is 40" tall and I love it, yes I have to stand on a chair to do things in the tank but it makes it eye level, I would say 36" would be ideal, but I'm redesigning my canopy so it has hidden doors in the front so you don't had to struggle to flip the whole thing over anymore.

I design my stands for best viewing pleasure. If its in a room where people normally stand I make it higher, if they normally sit I make it lower within reason. My 100G is in my dining room where we sit at the table and its 38" tall. That way you are viewing the center of the tank, not looking up or down. It also allows plenty of room underneath for the sump and skimmer, I even built it 24" front to back even though the tank is 18" so I would have more room for stuff. The extra room in back gave me a shelf behind the display for my ballasts and closed loop pump to sit on.

Yeah, I'm battling with the same question. I'm gonna do the Telgar build for a 90g frag. From my measurments, 35" comes right below hip level (putting the top of the stand right at groin/scrot level). The tank is 24" tall which will put the top of the tank sitting on the stand right about 60" (5ft).

Great for viewing the frags, still gotta use a step stool for maintenance....
......don't know. I just don't wanna have to crouch down everytime I look at my frags.

    Great thread Sco....8)

I suggest getting your sump, refugium, skimmer and any other equipment together and seeing how much room they take, especially the skimmer height. You need enough room to not only get the skimmate cup off for cleaning but be able to remove the entire skimmer every so often too. If the tank has an internal overflow you need room for the piping and valves so they don't interfere. If you plan on a calcium reactor provide room for it and a CO2 bottle.
There never seems to be enough room no matter how big or tall you make it.
Another thing I did was place the bottom 2x4s flat rather than on edge which gained 2" in usable height right off.
