I'm not sure how the "open" and "closed" function works. Nothing seems to happen.

Also, how deep should it sit in water and should that side tube be under water?

it should sit in about 6-8 inches of water. the stand pipe that the air intake tubing is hooked to is how you adjust the water level in the skimmer. turn it to closed a little bit at a time and watch the water level rise.

I'll have to mess with it tomorrow. Anytime I try and raise it into 6-8", it stops pumping as the water level gets below the inner tube.

Right now the water level outside comes up to the lettering.

Adjusting the stand like didntvseem to do much.

I wish I knew where I saw this. However, I was reading that the backpressure of the outlet tube being submerged in the water can cause some issues. People have taken a pvc pipe, drilled some holes in it up to the water level to alleviate some of the back pressure of it being under water.

If you look at the gate valve version of the Reef Octopus skimmers, they have a gate valve and the opening is horizontal to the ground, not facing downwards.

I'll find a picture of mine after lunch.

I can take the elbow off, it's just loud when exposed to air.
