Ok, well after much deliberation the time has finally come to start building up the tank. Don't worry, i'll reactive my dormant build thread soon.

I'm just curious as to how people have based their tanks. Have you gone sand then rock on top or put rock on the bottom and then put sand around it.

    Rock then sand for stability

I suggest a layer of egg crate under the rock before adding substrate. It disperses the weight of the rock, preventing pressure points and possible cracking, volume considering, of course.

Burying the rock 4" seems deep IMO. I keep mine adjusted at roughly 1.5".

That an idea i hadn't thought of cheers... The tank is a 180G and is 6 foot. is it plausible to add 2-3 inches of sand and then bury it an inch or so deep for same levels of stability ?

Absolutely. 2-3" of (total) substrate with an inch of rock covered is ideal IMO. At that tank volume, I cut the crate into squares. This allows for scaping adjustments without having to tear your tank apart, and gives your sand sifters minimal obstacles.
