I was reading feeding 101 by inwall75 and this quote got me thinking...

we have some salt build up on the side of our sump and not quite a quarter inch of gunk in the bottom::). What would be the best way to clean this? Any help would be appreciated!
    thanks!

what i use to clean my sump is a turkey baster. it takes a little while but is quite effective. make sure you turn off your return pump so as not to send back to your DT. You can also use a wet/dry vac if you have one. do you have a sand bed in there? if so i would use the turkey baster method. happy reefing

I asked inwall to help me with this recently ;D He said get a maxijet pump with some tubing, turn off the pumps, place the maxijet in the sump and suck out the water and vacuum the sump out with the maxijet. Will not get all of it out but he said will get a lot of it out.

I am going to try to do this maybe this weekend. I havent got much detritus in my sump but in one section of it there seems to be more

My sump ia about 1" of the floor in my cabinet so just use some half inch tubing to siphon the gunk out after pumps switched off. My sump is also bb.

I just did this. I used one of those python siphon kits that hooks up to your faucet, it worked really well for me. I was able to vacuum out all of the gunk on the bottom of the sump with no issues at all.

I have a section where my overflow fed ATS drops the water, at one point I did have about a quarter inch worth of gunk in there. I put two sally light foots in there, and have never had a problem since :)
