My GF wants a small 10g saltwater tank FOWLR, for her room, no room for sumps/or all that goofy stuff, can she just use a hang on bank filter from like wal-mart or petco? and change the media to carbon only or whatever?

Im not real sure but she really wants to give it a go, 10g tanks are only about 10 dollars. Any help is apprechiated.

    Thanks!

you can just use just HOB filters, thats how a lot of us have quarantine / hospital tanks set up. just keep the bio load small and do weekly 2-3 gallon water changes and it should be ok. what was she hoping to keep in a 10 gallon FOWLR anyways?

Smaller tanks are much harder to maintain than larger ones simply because theres way less room for error.

Try to get a HOB with a bio wheel. It will make a huge difference. Like said before you will probably want a small bio load. If possible I would also look for a decent HOB skimmer.

idk if id do a 10, unless your gonna be on top of it, you should at least try a 20 long, member, the more water the more room for error with out losing everything

Two damsels would be do-able. Two clowns would be pushing it but still do-able if you stay on top of maintenance.

Put plenty of live rock in there and just use a nano powerhead like a MP10 or similar. Water changes will need to be done regularly though.

Shes not thinking long term, like < 1yr is what I would say before she gets something around a 55g, really the 10g is just a tester to see if she can keep up on maintence and intrest in the hobby, before she spends x dollars on a 55g tank plus LR / filters/pumps/ect.
