I recently upgraded from a 75g rr to a standard 120g rr single overflow. I had two mp10w-es's on my 75 I really like them. They were perfect for my needs. I have not installed them on the new tank yet. I was thinking about selling the mp10's and getting a single mp40.

Would this be worth it? On Ecotechs web site it the chart makes the single mp40 look to have enough flow for a mixed reef tank and more than twin mp10s.

My options are using the mp10's, a single mp40, another brand of power head/heads or a closed loop like the one on mellesreef.com

My budget is $500. Using one mp10 and an mp40 is not an option either because I would have to sell the mp10s to pay for an mp40.

    What is your suggestion

    I recommend 2 Ecotech pumps rather than 1. I have 2 x MP 40 on a 57g. I like lots of flow. I'm not sure I understand the budgeting you're doing though.

If you sold an MP10 for, lets say, $250, you could get an MP40 to replace it and be $300 under budget. You would also have an MP10 for the back and an MP40 for a side. You could replace both and still spend about $500.

sorry if I was not clear. I would be selling the mp10 to pay for the mp40.

It would not be in a addition too.

So you will not be adding any additional money? If that is the case, I would keep the two MP10's. They work together well. That said, if you're keeping SPS, I think you lack for flow with any of the options.

mp10s max glass thinkness is 3/8", if thats all your 120 is then i would stick with what you have. I doubt that it will be enough flow for SPS. whats the length of that tank?

Would putting the 10's on the back wall synced make any difference?

It is all speculation, but my feeling is regardless of the configuration, two MP10's will not be sufficient for SPS in a 120g.

That said, it may be barely sufficient for startup. If your buget allows you to upgrade over time, then set them (I think one on each end is the preferred with one on an end and one on the back being alternate) and upgrade as soon as possible.

Oh, and yes, that glass thickness issue also needs to be addressed. If the glass is too thick, your only option is to upgrade to the MP40.
