I am having trouble with green, red & hairy algae in my marine tank. I use a scraper, but I can't get rid of it all. I am managing to keep the front & sides quite clear, but the sides ( & especially the back ) are bad. The skimmer tube & heater are covered with haiy algae. I had snails, but an unwelcome hermit crab seems to have taken care of those. When I had this problem in my freshwater tank, I covered it with a blanket for 3 days & that took care of the problem, but in my marine tank, I'm afraid it would kill my coral.
    Any suggestions ?

How long is your lighting left on, an extended photo period can give you problems. Also make sure you don't overfeed. I only feed mine every other day.

You also need to get your nitrates down.

    Hi,
I've had great success with Algae Magic from Weiss. Works in about 3 days and then repeat in 2 weeks. Also keep the lights off for a few days. Any sunlight shinning on the tank should be blocked. Do a water change before using Algae Magic. Getting rid of the phosphats and nitrates is the long term solution. Good luck!!

I'd ask where are the DKH and Calcium levels at also.

Thanks. I will check my phosphates & nitrates.
I feed my fish everyday. Perhaps I should try every other day.
My lights are on for 12 hours a day. Is that too much ?
Would leaving my lights off for a few days & blocking any other light, hurt the coral ?
I do a water change every other week.

I add 10 ml of calcium to my tank each week at the suggestion of my local store.
