It's a shaded pole motor, they should only start in the correct rotation.I've have 4 mj1200,2 older ones and 2 of the new pro series and never had an issue with them reversing.I'm not sure what would be causing the issue.Reversed polarity wouldn't matter on a shaded pole motor, the armature would have to be installed backwards to change rotation of the motor.

Lol im looking to try to set it up with a sureflow mod and use it on a wave maker possibly in a wavebox. From what it sounds like they aren't the best option but I have afew laying around so id like to give it a go.from what I gather when they make that clacking sound its the impeller starting in the wrong direction.annd this is the reason they aren't very good in a wavebox for very long.I could be wrong

I have been having thesame problem with the pro series. I have pumps from the 400 up to 1200 and at times when restarting the pumps they run in reverse. Oh well, don'twant to deal with mRineland so they are jut back up pumps when needed.

If it's the clicking sound they make on start up,they're not running backwards, they have a toothed clutch that has to engage and they can make a horrible noise doing so.They only do this when setup with the prop instead of the impellar. When set up with the prop, they are no good for use with wavemakers, timers, etc.Starting and stopping would definately kill it pretty quick by stripping out the clutch.i have a pair and just leave them running 24/7.

So the clutch is internal on the pump? As in inside the casing?

no,the teeth(clutch) are located between the magnet and prop on the shaft.
