I tryed making a sump using overflows and plumbing and all that, all did was make a big mess. I gave up on the idea for a while. I was brainstorming one day on the way home from work and this is what I came up with.

Materials - 2 maxi jet 1200's one to set the water level in the dt for the return. This pump will not be plugged in, it's only used for the siphon overflow. The second pump is used as the return and to set the water level in the sump.

    1/2" pvc tubing
2 straight quick connects to attach to the outlets of the pump
1 adapter to attach the pvc tubing to the pvc plastic ball valve
    1 1/2" ball valve

Alright so heres how it works. I attached the plastic prefilter to each inlet of the pump, they work great for setting the water level and reduce the girgling noise. I put one pump at the very top water level of the DT, this way if the power shuts off it will only siphon about 3 gallons into the sump. The second pump I did the same principle. I put it low enough inside the sump to allow the water from the feed to fill up enough to prevent a flood incase of a siphon break. The return pump (the one in the sump) is set to pump faster then the feed from the DT. if some how the feed line from the dt were to lose siphon it would quickly run dry preventing a flood in the dt.

I hope this makes sense, the only problem I found with this set up is the return pump in the sump sucks up a bit of air because it's faster then the feed siphon, im sure this will decrease pump life, but you could always use the feed pump to replace it. Also, since the return pump mixes with alot of air theres are tons of micro bubbles on the return, my quick fix was to feed the return line into one of those cheap overflow filter boxes, it works pretty well if you look at the dt pic. I hope this helps anyone with a low budget!
