So I've got some things lying around.20g long, small m/h hob skimmer and filter. Can I just use egg crate and changed water from from my main and not have to cycle? No sand no LR? I've seen tanks online with just egg crate. Thanks.

Youd still want to give it a bit of time to settle

So I can get my equipment cycled? My main question is can I just use water? No natural filtration? Will it ne harder to get params in check?

No, you need a filter or water movemnt, otherwise your params will never be in check...
and what do you mean by cycle your equipment

For a frag tank you need SOME things you need for a reef..I am setting one up in my 14g biocube. I have the stock pump for flow, i have sand, and i will have LR rubble and some eggcrate and a filter pad for carbon since i will have multiple types of corals in there.

IMO, i would make sure you have some type of skimmer unless its just going to be a zoanthid frag tank or just plain softies, and some type of powerhead.

A frag tank is just a tank to keep corals in to grow out or to sell, because some people like to grow out their zoa frags or SPS frags into mini colonies before putting them into the DT..Or if they need some place to hold frags that they and have no room for.

And equipment does not cycle..A cycle is the build up of bacteria essential for a reef tank. Most people tell you too wait a few months before adding anything because during a cycle Ammonia, nitrate and nitrite spike which can kill most things when they spike. I have never cycled a tank, I have had 3 tanks and the 1st one had cured LR and sand, and just brought it home and set it back up(there were a few algae blooms) the 2nd one, i added my 13 month old cured LR to it and it never went through spikes or algae blooms.

Well I mean I would have a hob filter and a power head I know about water movement. Do I need sand and or rubble for bacteria to cling to? I will be using. Skimmer, filter, heater, power head, mh, I just wanted to know if I need LR or rubble and sand.

I would add some sand, but really its mostly if you want some look in there, i have sand in mine because i dont like the look of barebottom tanks.

But what you have is good enough..You dont need an HOB unless your going to run carbon or other filter media's.

No problem..Good luck with the frag tank..

I would also add a tiny piece of LR from your DT if you have one..Just for the extra filtration in there. And you could add a goby or something with it if you wanted too..
