also new tanks go through algae phases dont worry as nutrients they feed on go down they starve and die so going through the phases are kinda a good thing especially going thru them early also good husbandry is always the way to go

Basically everything has been said. When you think about it, it's really an easy concept. You need to export everything you put into the tank. Remember, the tank is basically a closed system, anything you put in there will stay in there unless you take it out. This can be accomplished by a skimmer, mechanical filtration (cleaned), skimmer and refugium. The best thing you can do is use RO/DI water, watch your feedings, add a refugium (has really benefited my tank) and use a good, oversized skimmer and clean those filters often. A phosphate reactor is good to use to.

I read that a UV sterilizer helps greatly, I'm actually looking into one now. My algae has cut down a lot since I started using a tap water filter. But I want to get rid of it as much as possible

Don't add water to the tank :)

But really, everything the others said. A UV sterilizers will only work on free floating algae. If you wish to control hair algae and other algaes that grow on rocks and glass don't get one. I wouldn't recommend one unless you really need it to control bacteria outbreaks and free floating algae.

what they said, plus don't get distracted by the pretty colors of coral and lose sight of that small little patch of turf algae that is just begging to grow out in your tank. I can't tell you how many people I have bumped into that have these pest algae come in from frags...
