I have a FW tank with an overflow pouring to two wet/dry bins full of scrubbies before draining into a sump. the water coming out of the pipes is extremely loud. It's a lot of flow, it's obnoxiously loud. I've thought about burying the end of the pipe into a sponge, or maybe using some sort of sprinkler head attachment. The water needs to continue to distribute evenly over the drip tray.

Anyone have any idea for silencing pipes?

What's on the top end of the pipes? Sounds like you need to vent the overflows to quiet them down to me. Maybe a pic of the top parts too pls?

I think they are adequately vented, You'd know better than I though. I have a thin pipe running down the overflow pipes to vent. Here's a picture of it back in the day getting cleaned out - it was disgusting.

If it was me I would switch out the 90's with the breather tubes on them for "tees", and put a short piece of pipe in the top, just long enough to be above the water level in the tank. Is it possible to switch it out though? I can't see what is on the inside of the overflow box, are there upward facing 90's? That could help.

Also valves on the over flow side aren't reccommended. If you are trying to restrict the flow, you can put a ball valve on the output of the pump side. Any restriction on the overflow side is an overflow wating to happen IMO.

Sounds to me like the noise is being generated from water splashing down into your scrubby tubs not air noise being generated from the siphon at the of the system. I would think either reducing flow into the area, covering up the ends that are making noise (generally in water), or creating some sort of silencer are your best options.

Is is a gurgling/flushing sound? Sorry I assumed it was, if not then Mobalized has good ideas. Sorry if I confused things.

I had on old wet/dry filter that had a spinner bar assembly on the ends of the pipes that spread it evenly over the filter material and made it nearly silent. It was all made out of PVC peices available at home depot. i'll try and dig it out of the closet and snap a pic when I get home in a few hours.

Oh yeah, not a gurgling sound, just sounds like an !@#load of water coming out of a pipe. It sounds like a whole waterfall is in my livingroom. Alot of the problem is that the tank is backed up to an open corner with no back on the stand, it actually seems to echo. But there's nothing I can do about that.

I do have a valve on the return btw, The valves on the overflow pipes are so I can direct all the water to one or the other pipe while I'm cleaning, etc.

Some sort of silencer is exactly what I need, I'm just not sure what I could use without restricting the flow too much. Any ideas?

    thanks for the replies btw
