I like the angel idea. You could get a dwarf angel and put him in the tank in the early goings. Basically you have to read the tendencies of each fish. It will certainly help to be knowledgeable in your own regards but until then we can help you get started. Figure it this way most all small and weaker fish should go in first. With your visions they should be small strong fish.

I have a yellow watchman goby and a diamond goby and a sleeper goby and they are easy going and compatible tankmates. The diamond and sleeper do more work. The yellow watchman just looks cool and stays in one spot.

When it comes to angels read up on their reef compatibility and stay away from the larger ones. Butterflies are hard to keep. I'm still trying to keep one. Damsels are bullies and territorial big time. Never had a foxface. They get big. Anthias are nice fish and reef compatible. Purple ones are hard to keep as they are picky eaters. The orange ones are cool. Read up on them as they have gender issues. You can't have 2 males in the tank or they will fight.

i didn't read through this whole thread but i saw that you said that you don't have money for a lot live rock, i don't know if it was mentioned but you could use base rock for a fraction of the price and get the same benefits with none of the troubles.
as for triggers the niger and pinktail are two of the most peaceful.
