Well, then things will be less complicated. I would still add some live rock in addition to the base rock and let it cure for at least a month before adding any fish. The water parameters and bacteria build-up take some time. Even base rock will turn into a biofilter after a while. So, it's up to you but make sure you take your time!

I personally love the clown trigger but it will grow to maybe 1.6 feet and will need the appropriate environment, i.e. an a tank about 200g in size. So, I would recommend you research the adult size of each fish and habits and make sure you can accommodate them..

The nigger trigger will grow to about 20 inches. So always remember not to overstock!

As to your rock issue, you shouldn't add any ordinary rock to the tank. Silicate based rock will leach minerals and silicates into the tank causing algae issues. You can test it by placing some vinegar on it. If it starts to fizz and bubble a little, then it's carbonate based and IMO ok to add. If not, I wouldn't add it.

Also, if there is black stuff on the rock, that's ok, that's dead organic material. If you do add that rock to the tank, it will rot and help your cycle along. Now speaking of cycles, that is what transforms base rock into live rock. IMO, base rock is any rock that isn't live rock. It can be any type of rock IMO. Live rock is just rock with denitrifying bacteria on it to transform fish waste into harmless compounds. When you start your tank, you will need to cycle and when your parameters for ammonia and nitrite are at 0, then you can start to add fish, but slowly over time or you will have major issues. Good luck.

anyone know the average size the triggers get in aquariums? would a humu be better than a clown or an the clown work?
