Are you going to be using sand? If so i would take out the egg crate, doesnt really do anything, it also will not allow to get anything that burrows and it also can trap stuff you dont want trapped!

really? I am going to be using sand. I was using the egg crate to protect the glass. But I guess its not really needed and would be more beneficial without it huh. I have read that as livestock burrows and sand settles it can cause rock slides. Do I have too much rock?

Never heard of too much rock unless you cram the tank from edge to edge to where the fish cant swim.

We have a sand bed and when we redid the aquascaping i pushed the rock down until it hit glass on all the low points so it couldnt slide. We have 50lbs of base rock and 10lbs live rock in a 45 gallon.

I think it looks pretty cool gives you lots of areas for fish to hide and a nice balance to put lower light and higher light corals in the respective areas.

Heres how u do it for no slides, take the egg crate out and do the stack with out send and then put sand in, it will go around the rock thus they cant get under the rock,

I also dont think theres such thing as to much rock but im a big fan of the more is less. I like a lot of open caves and such. This allows better viewing of the fish IMO

Just me, personally, I'd use maybe half that much rock. Leaves room for adding things, and things that grow.

I made the mistake of using way too much LR in my first tank, and spent the first six months removing it piece by piece as I realized I had no room. Of course, every time I removed a piece of rock, the aquascape would look "wrong" and I'd have to re-do the whole thing. I must've re-done the aquascape twenty times. What fun.

I'd also lose the eggcrate and use the method oceanparadise1 just described.

All just personal opinion; take with large grain of salt. ;)

I dont think its too much.. I like the island look.. youll just have to glue frags to the side of it when you get coral, which I think looks cool..

I personally don't use eggcrate under my rocks, but GARF has an interesting take on it in their article on Bullet Proof Reefs. Take a look if you're curious.
