well I have a 70w metal halide pendant and an electronic ballast.
It's close to time for me to get a new bulb for it but as i was searching a lot of bulbs say HQI. Does this mean i need a certain type of ballast? or is it just (better? fancy?).

I believe HQI typically refers to DE bulbs now a days. Im pretty sure they also mean run on an electronic ballast but I remember reading somewhere that magnetic ballasts can run them too now.

Technically a DE is not a 100% substitute for HQI. HQI is a certain type of bulb.

Not all DE's are HQI, and there are definitely SE HQI bulbs in other wattages.

Unfortunately, so may have wrongly used the HQI and DE term interchangeably so many do believe that HQI is just another way to say DE.

The good news is that I don't think I have ever seen a true HQI 70w DE, so any bulb that is a 70w DE will more than likely work.
