what does hqi stand for in hqi metal halide?

some say hqi some dont is hqi suppose to be better?

 

Not really sure.....all I know is that its a new technology in MH lighting and that supposedly a 150 watt hqi has the same intensity of a regular 250 watt MH. Also with HQI you need to have UV protection glass between the bulb and the water.

 

New technology? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's been around for 10+ years, probably much longer.

 

Well, I'm definitely not an expert in this area. I thought it was a newer technology to the aquarium world.

 

I think that can sum up the attitude of anything when it comes to this hobby right down to and including the type of water that is used. Usually I try to compromise what I see here and other places with what makes logical sense to me.

Some people base their information on experience and others on what they have read. A couple of small conclusions that I have arrived at. When it comes to lighting almost all of the tests that are performed on bulbs and ballasts use instrumentation that is generally out of the range of normal people to purchase or obtain. Or if you have access to them, a centimeters difference in the way you hold the device could be the difference in obtaining good or bad data.
Energy effiency, P.A.R. values, Spectral values, Coral growth and type, and how does the light appeal to your eyes and your coral. These are all important items to consider.
There are too many variables sometimes for people to answer a question and have it be the right answer everytime. Which is why there are so many opinions and debates over which is best and what one should I use. It's kind of like the 4-5 watts per gallon answer. It was the best way for someone to come up with a general answer to a vague question without getting too specific or scientific. ;D
