Hi everybody. I'm 6 years into this hobby. I found out this now. Maybe I'm not too bright:)I have 125 reef tank with 30 gal sump. Every day I have like 1 gal evaporation. I do not have covers ( lids). Because of this I do not have to use humidifire when furnace is runing during winter. In family room when tank is 60% all other rooms 40-50%. When I turn humidifire on I was like 70. Crazy but makes sens.1 gal evaporation...lot of water. What you guys think and maybe should've put covers on? But I heard it is no good due to lack of gas exchange.Thanks.

Covers will help, but block light. If you don't have SPS than I would probably go for the lid. Many factors affect evaporation like temp, water movement, lights, humidity.. Evaporation is high in the winter because your house is dry. If you turn on your humidifire, you may see less evaporation. I would also check for leaks in your tank, but this isn't too much above normal. If the salinity is low than you may have a leak. I have a 37g plus a 10g sump and I have about a half gallon/week.

Now you got me worry. Do you guys think gallon a day is way above average? Is this normal with 125 plus 30 gal. sump, 5 koralias, Mag 12, phosban reactor, chiller, Octopus skimmer, 2 MH150w and t5 -54w? Please let me know. Thanks.

I lose almost a gallon a day in a 65, I think that's not bad for a tank your size.

MY 125 with sump averages 2-3 gallons a day, and no leaks.

Ok then. Thank you. Now I feel better.125 with 30 gal. sump around gallon a day seems ok. Thanks. But do you agree or can you see at your house the same symptoms? That that water evaporates and makes your house more humid? I think that makes sens.

The water has to go somewhere ;). The water evaporates into the air and without a means to exhaust that air to the outside, the humidity in the house has to rise.

If you lose a gallon a day in evap, then you need to take a gallon a day out of the air with a dehumidifier to keep the humidity stable.
