I have always heard that Mandarins will pick at the rocks whether there is a pod population or not.

To see if you have pods in the tank: a couple hours after lights out, shine a red light into the tank. Pods will come out at night and can be seen moving around the rock work. Also, after lights out, shine a flashlight along the side of the tanks and Pods will be seen going toward the light. Another way to check for pods is to take a small rock and put it in fresh water to see how many pods come out. If there are no pods then your population is probably depleted.

I am currently hatching brine shrimp in my laundry room as that is the warmest room in the house and there is a large window that allows for sunshine. I feed the brine to my corals and noticed my little male mandarin following the turkey baster around the tank. I squirted the brine toward his face and he readily ate it. Now I put it in the tank and he will come out and almost drink out of the turkey baster. My female doesn't like the turkey baster and tends to make her way to the other side of the tank during feeding.
