There is a cool new wave system called the Hydor Smart Wave. Mrsaltwatertv did a cool youtube video about it. My Question, which I've tried to contact Hydor about with no response. But with no response i'm guessing I know the answer. In the video the rep talks about how it is compatible with the evolution and magnum Korilia powerheads. I have an older Korilia 3 pump and was inquiring on if i could purchase one evolution pump and use my current pump with this Smart Wave system.. Its pretty cool, being its 60.00!

No. The K series are not designed to start and stop frequently.

I have two of the Koralia Evolutions 1400's on a Reefkeeper Lite switching every 30seconds and they ahve been great for about 18 monhs now. Over 1.5 million starts and stops in that time! I also have a Evo nano 425 in my nano and its about half the size of the old K1, puts out the same flow, is controllable and draws less than half the power.

Before spending $60 on the Hydor timer you might look at the Reefkeeper Lite for around $110-$120. It has many more uses than just timing a couple powerheads and is not that much more. You can monitor and control lights, pumps, fans and heaters, pH, moonlights, chillers etc with it. Itsalso nice since you can alarm and shut things off if it gets too hot then turn them back on once it cools off.

+1 with the price of the RKL, why not? Although, re: EVOs, mine has started, starting in reverse sometimes now, which is kind of annoying. My understanding was they are not supposed to do this, but apparently it is possible. So, I'd say, even better, take the money for the pumps and controller and just by a Vortech ;D

If the Evos are running backwards you either have the very early models which had slipped bushing problems or they have a cracked front grill and/or the rubber bump stop on the grill is missing. In all cases Hydor will send you replacement parts for free if you contact their Customer Service with an explaination of the problem.
