has anyone used hydrogen peroxide to treat (bleach) live rock instead of the regular chlorine bleach?

Im soaking some live rock in it right now

    its decomposition is 2 H2O2 → 2 H2O + O2

so it breaks down into water and oxygen, seemed like a safer alternative than chlorine bleach

any chemists in here can chime in

    Thanks.

That makes good sense to me. Then again, so did soaring off of that building last night w/ my shower curtain. It was epic.

well... in principle, chlorine is an oxidizer. ehhehe But considering its the chlorine you want to do the killing. If your just releasing oxygen off into the water, your feeding "chemical oxygen demand" and "biological oxygen demand"... whatever organics or organisms are in there are are using up available oxygen.. the chlorine your adding to the water goes to HOCl (hypochlourus acid) and OCl- (hypochlorite ion). the acid kills in seconds, while the ion takes up to 30 minutes. basically it rips the cell wall apart (lipids) and thats that. good nuff?

oh when you smell that "pool smell" thats indicative of poor swimmer hygiene!! not the smell of pool water.. what your smelling is chloramines (reaction from the funk on swimmers body) lol
