    How long can sand sit in containers (buckets in my case) before the risk of Hydrogen Sulfide build-up/release?

    how deep is considered a deep sand bed?

    Enough to have an anaerobic layer; that usually means 4+ inches.

    well my case was 8 weeks! I know that i had some in a week because I had a towel over it at first and got a gas whiff when i took it off

    When it's against the glass, it's usually Oxygen created by the cyanobacteria and live right at the surface of the glass. When the bubbles are coming from all over your sandbed, that's Nitrogen caused by the de-nitrification process.
