to quickly to just drop a line in here...the one butterfly i had was a copperband butterfly and i think they are gorgeous and are reef safe for what coral I had which didnt go beyond mushrooms and polyps so idk how well it would work w/ other corals but my butterfly never picked on my corals at all

    Hey Freyre, where you from?

Butterfly fish in general are not reef safe , you get good ones and bad ones, same with dwarf angels
may years ago the ones with long snouts like the copperband and the Yellow long nose where considered safest as they eat inverts from crevises , hence the long snout
but most of the short snout ones consume sponges as part of their diet and may peck or rip to peices anything that resembles a sponge - which to a butterfly fish , many do seem to

Well, congrats on the new tank, but here is where I am going to offer a little advise to ya......

One of those powder browns is probably going to have to go. The rule of thumb for tangs is that you may keep more than one, as long as the coloration and/or the shape is different. Like a yellow tang and a hippo tang. In a tank your size, I would not go more than two tangs. With a longer tank, you could push it to three, but the 48" is a little short for tangs in general. You can still keep them.....just not very many. Your scopas and one powder brown should get along. However, you shouldn't have tangs at this point of your tanks existence anyway.

Now, concerning that anemone. I would take that back yesterday. Your tank is waaaaay too new for an anemone and if that thing dies, it will take your tank with it. It is death incarnate. IMO, anemones need to be kept by expert reefkeepers with tanks that are at least one year old. So, that needs to go back to the LFS. Be careful removing it from the rock it attached itself to.

Now, since this tank is not even two months old, you need to slow down. In fact, I would take most of the fish back. At this point in the game, your stock should be one or two fish, and hardy ones at that. You have your damsel and that is fine. You have a clown and that is OK. I fear though, that the tangs are going to die in the environment they are living in.

Which brings me to the question of parameters. What are your numbers running? Temp, NH4, NO2, NO3 and pH? If you are not testing those parameters, you need to get some test kits. NOT the strips. API makes a beginner set. If you want to get the best, Salifert and Elos are available to you.

If your tank is showing ammonia and nitrites, I would take all fish back except the blue damsel and let the tank catch up. Then, once the tank has cycled, just add one fish every 10 to 14 days. You have a fragile eco-system here. You cannot go gung-ho without expecting some pretty nasty consequences.

So put aside the idea for your butterfly and angelfish for now (there is no reefsafe version of either that I know of anyway), get your tank in order and procede SLOWLY. Be mellow with the tank and don't do too much at once. Patience is key in this hobby. If you are not patient, you will be left with feelings of frustration and loss. This much I will guarantee.
