I just stopped by my favorite LFS today and amazingly, they were finally able to get in a Hawaiian Red Tail Filefish for me. I have been searching for these for the longest time. I've been checking liveaquaria. com everyday and they are always sold out. These are not reef safe, but if you're into Triggers, this is a basically a trigger without the attitude, size, and meanness. It is a very docile and easygoing fish that will mind its own business. He looks cool when his horn is "triggered". A beautiful oddball looking fish. Here is a general picture of how they look:

    Hi Nautilus,

Actually, they are quite affordable. Usually around $20-$30. But for some reason, they are hard to find at local fish stores. Definitely worth the price if you can find one.

Update on the Filefish.....This is a great fish. He is probably the biggest of all the fish in the tank, yet gentle as a teddy bear to everyone. Basically minds his own business and is not a pig come mealtime. I am already looking for another one, a Flame Filefish. If you ever wanted to get a trigger but was scared of the aggressiveness, I highly recommend the Filefish.

Just bought another filefish(I'm in love with these!). They are not reef safe but highly recommended for a fish only tank. Very gentle and unique looking fish. The one I bought this time was a tassled file. I was so happy that I was able to find one of this color and with the smaller size. They are definitely an acquired taste. You'll either love them or hate them! Here's a picture of one very similar to mines.

It says reef safe on the site but I would'nt take the chance. I think if you feed them well, they probably will not bother any inverts. I currently have my tassled with a small 1" chromis and and he does not even pay attention to him. They get along fine. They are compatible with just about any fish(except for triggers).
