    my 12g nano has been up and running for over 1 yr. i havent had any problems with algae and i started using purple up to incease my colors in the tank(i think it looks awesome). I went to LFS and they the man told me he would give me a strand of sea weed for free , i accepted and put it in my nano cube before i put any coral in. after a while the seaweed grew everwhere so i took it all out. the i started getting this brown algae on the sand. i thought it would go away and started doing more water changes. after a while it started noticeing bubbles form in it or get stuck? then i used red slime remover and it slowed down alittle bit. a few weeks later it started spreading and getting long and hair like flowing everywhere. i read online somwhere to increase Alk and reduce light. so i did that i was useing reef builder at the time and i also stopped all additives like purp up and essential reef..... nothing!still growing strong! no nitrates or nitrites. everything else is perfect. i bought a 10 gallon tank that have been cycling for months and in gonna transfer all my coral into that tank to fix the algae problem.. i dont know what else to do its basically covering all my coral.

    Are you using RO water to mix up your saltwater or are you taking water out of your tap?

    The type of water being used is the first question. Also, what is this "seaweed" that you were given, any pics or pics of any of the other algae? What about phosphates, how is that level?

    You really should get some RO or RO/DI water. I thought using Distilled or water from the RO stations at walmart would be good until I got my own RO/DI unit. Man, no more algae problems for me since I got it. It could also just be your tank aging. Mine has gone through three different waves of algae but now seems to be stabilizing and "knock on wood" I haven't had any new outbreaks.

    Pictures may help some. Here is my mini essay;
    I will suggest that when you post and are asking for help or for ideas, please include all basic information. Basic information should include; all water parameters(Calcium,Magnesium,Alkalinity,Ph and Nitrate and Phosphate levels) along with Temp. of your tank and Sg (specific gravity).Size of tank and complete set up meaning, filter type (sump, canister etc.), if you use a skimmer,lighting (what type and total output)plus what type of lighting are you using and what is your lighting schedule (how long a period are your actinic and daylights on) and how old are your lights and if you have fish only with live rock and if you keep corals. Also how long the tank has been up. I know some of this is in your bio but many bios don't contain this info. How many times has someone posted and then there is this list of postings addressing the above. If you give the most info you can to give us a good profile, it will cut down on response time and mis-diagnosis or answers that don't fit and we will all benefit.
    Some of this you answered but please address the rest.

    Oh dear, I would have to say dinoflaggelates. And at a year old would have to guess at a very high phosphate level. How often do you feed? Have you added any new plastics/equipment? Alk is way low. Need to bring that up.71 degrees????
