I've killed about as many. It sucks, but with each door that closes, another is opened. Now you've got the opportunity to redo your sump and stand. You'll be happier than you were once you get it just how you want it.

As an aside, I've had a 300w heater in my 10g for those cold nights and othing has gone wrong. I've kept it set to ~5* less than I want my temp to be and it's been solid. Any reason why I should be worried?

I will be buying an upgraded unit with a reg on it so this doesn't happen again.

I just bought a protein skimmer too. I was so looking forward to seeing if my fish seemed happyer .. too late now. I know it's not funny but I'm starting to laugh at how stupid I was and the thought of being a "Schooling Fish serial killer"

    err heh

again thanks for all your advice and you will see GEN 2 tank up in a month or so. Due to me being on the road and we just bought our first house (im 29 so im happy i was able to do it!) my wife and I are going to be busy so I guess in a way this was meant to be. I think EVERYTHING happens for a reason even when your the one that caused it to happen.

Go with a couple smaller heaters. Big ones have the power to cook tanks when they break, as you know. A couple 300 watts should be fine for a 90 gallon.

No, not in my opinion. It is a great heater but as you can see it says the range goes up to 99 degrees. If it malfunctions your will over heat the tank again. You want one similar but look for a feature that only allows it to go up to 82-84 dgrees.

Just a note...those style heaters have no internal temp regulation and require a controller. I noticed the one you got listed the controller as "optional". This may be a dumb question (if so, no insult mean't) but did you use and set the controller correctly or just plug the heater in the wall?

Sorry for your loss. It's all a BIG learning experience, hang in there.
