Be sure to recalibrate with distilled water. I had a reading of 1.032 once, almost flipped out until I recalibrated. Then it read a correct 1.0265.

But all th temp thing will change it and just so I don't go crazy let's say it is at 40ppt if I add rodi water it should go down to 35ppt or do I add more salt to get 35ppt I believe it is the first one but just making sure :) tanks

If this is in your DT, I would do neither. At your next water change (5-10%), add water that is at a lower salinity, like at 25 ppt. Do this a few times until it's where you want it.

If this is just makeup water, yes, adding more freshwater will lower (dilute) your salinity.

Ok so less ppt = less salt in the water just want to be 110% sure

The lower the number, the less salt in the water.

For example, 1.026 has more salt than 1.020

no, don't use just distilled water to calibrate. Calibrate with 35ppt calibration fluid. You can use both though, although I skip the water and just use calibration fluid. And yes, less ppt = less salt in water. PPT is Parts Per Thousand salinity.
