    so wouldn't my system get all dirty with just what i have now if i took out my media?

    I don't have a protein skimmer yet..

    The idea is to grow bacteria that consume much of the waste and byproducts. The waste bacteria produce are water vapor and gasses such as Co2 and nitrogen. Thats why you want lots of good live rock and I like a functioning deep sand bed since it also houses other critters important to the succes of a reef system.
    The sump will eventually collect some bio film and solids which can be vacuumed out every few months as part of your regular mainetance. I clean my sump about twice a year is all. I keep my bio load in check by only having 5 or 6 fish in a 100G system and feeding sparingly with nutritous foods, no frozen brine shrimp and things like that. The waste generation is not that much and the system pretty much takes care of itself.
