I figured I would post this to maybe help someone avoid the same mistake I made, and possibly get some advise. Long story short...

I turned on my RODI at night to fill my Brute. Family was over so I had a few too many and went to bed. You know what happened next. 100 gpd ro unit overnight equals approx 30 gallons onto the laundry room floor and under the wood floor in the kitchen. With the cost of replacing the floor I figure my homemade h2o ran about 100$ per gallon.

The moral of my story is don't drink and filter. My question is ... Anyone using a successful float or other set up to avoid this in the future?

(Maybe I should stick to using the vodka for dosing only.)

The answer to your problem is fairly straightforward. There are a number ways to limit the volume of RODI water produced. You could utilize a timer, a controller, or a float valve. If you don't have access to any of the above, you could calculate how long it takes to make X gallons of water and go from there. First figure out how much water you need, then calculate the amount of time it will take before committing to the endeavor.

Lastly--drinking; then producing vast quantities of reef water involves it's own set of risks.

    Good luck!

I was so bad at this my 5 gallon collection container was always in the slop sink. I finally got smart and hooked it to a water timer used for sprinklers or small drip irrigation systems. Set it to X amount of time and no more worry.

Reef sparky mentioned that as well. Sound like I'm going to homedepot this weekend, and possibly AA. Thanks for the help

I always make mine with the rodi tub sitting in the bathtub because I forget constantly.

Same concern here. I only make 10g at most during a waterchange, so it's always in the tub. XD

Glad I'm not alone. I could use good stories to help me laugh, otherwise I would cry. Thanks again all

well, the first time mine flooded, it went beneath the vanity, found the drain pipes hole, and leaked all over my downstairs neighbors washing machine. When it happened i was mortified. Now I'm tempted to do it again, but that's a different story altogether.

I've done it a few times. Luckily I have mine in the furnace room which is a cement floor in the basement with a drain in the room. teh carpet outside the furnace room has gotten wet a few times but other than that no problems. I am normally in the basement anyway, so now I leave the furnace room door open and the light on so I don't forget before I head to bed. It's worked fine since I started doing it that way.
