    umm... that article didn't make much sense to me.


    I think it's talking about adding salt for freshwater tanks.

    Definitely for freshwater tanks. Don't add the salt if you are keeping plants.

    most of what he states is true.i have had quite a few fresh tanks over the years and have used salt on occasion. the biggest problem is that not all fish(and almost no plants) can tolerate salt. anything with smooth skin will suffer(all cats, loaches) and NW cichlids have a very low tolerance. also any fish who prefers neutral or acidic water. that just crossed off almost 50% of popular fish and about 90% of plants. its probably not a great idea to use it unless as a last resort for a specific fish who has been injured, suffers from Ich and wont eat.

    well i was at walmart today looking and they have this fresh water puffer but it takes a teaspoon of salt per 5 gallon of water and i was wondering how that would effected the other fish in freshwater

    +1, good explanation.

    Except I would use it in a livebearer tank, or with fish specifically chosen from those same slightly salty environments, without hesitation.

    Also, this author needs to answer "Question: When sunlight shine on your tank, will salt will react into toxic cyanide?"....really?
