I float everything with the bag closed for 15 minutes or so, then open the bag. I transfer to another container, and drip. I drip everything. Depending on what it is determines the length of the acclimation time. If you bought a red hornet, I'd drip it to make sure it lives...expensive little 1mm coral there. ;)

I would float them for 15 minutes, then open the bag and put them straight in the tank. I don't like dripping things that have shipped.

Before I had a drip setup I just floated and placed in the tank. Now I drip everything. I don't have any loses that I could confidently say came from acclimating.

There's a chance when dealing with shipped fish or corals that when you open the bag, the pH will raise from contact with oxygen and you'll end up converting the ammonium to ammonia.

Well, not really a chance; that much is pretty guaranteed. The degree is the unknown; it may be a deadly swing, but it might be nothing.
