have you just started your tank cycling? if you have, the ammonia will slowly disappear as the cycle progresses.

Ammonia will kill fish before purple up will. Purple up is basically just a calcium supplement (with some other little things). It shouldn't affect fish unless you really abuse it obscenely.

Has your tank already cycled? You should not have ammonia in your tank unless something is wrong.

also, no reason to purple up if you are still cycling...

if you are cycling, leave it alone.

if you are not cycling, you need to first ID the source of ammonia and remove it. A water change is your best bet.

On a side note, IMO, purple up is not needed ever for anything. Maintaining proper Ca and Mg levels is more effective (and needs to be done anyway if this is a reef tank) at getting good coraline growth if that's your goal.

Yes you can hurt your fish by adding too much purple up. You need to test for anything you add to the tank or levels can get to high and only hurt things.

I agree if you have ammonia present you are in a cycle or mini cycle. Dont remove it or your cycle will not finish and the bacteria needed to keep your tank stable will not colonize. Do you have fish in the tank already?

purple up contains Iodide - in addition to calcium and magnesium
elevated levels of Iodide can harm things

so if you dont have 3 test kits - calk, mag and iodide - dont use it IME

Also check your pH - the use of Purple Up has been known to play havoc with it.
