well, i finally got another false percula today after one of the first 2 i got died. this clown is tiny next to my other one and they are swimming together and the little guy (neo) follows the big one (coral) everywhere. their colours are slightly different, coral is orangy with a darker colour on the top of her body and neo is really dark orange(maybe cause he's so young) but there lines are the same, very tiny black lines surounding the large white stripes, this is a false perc right? true percs have the thicker black stripes? and i can't believe it but i got him for $14.99 cdn which is cheap and he is in good shape and came out of a tank all by himself....it's so cute watching them together and now all i need is for them to take to my fake anenome! wish me luck, my tank perameters are great. should i test after adding a fish or no.thanks for letting me share in my excitment. P.S. how quickly do clowns grow?

    this is my test results.
    ammonia 0
    nitrite 0
    nitrate 0
    ph 8.2 - 8.4
    kh 8dkh
    phosphates 0

    sg 1.023
temp between 79 - 82 (depends on time of day)

There's more to clown species than thickness of lines :) Can you post pics of each clown?

true and false perculas look a lot alike. If you know what one looks like, that and the descriptions you typed above are a correct ID. Their shades of orange isn't what you'd use to tell the diff of true or false. However the thickness of the black lines between the orange and white portions of their body is a relatively good way to begin deciding. Overall size of the fish is another difference, assuming they are matured (false percs are bigger) There are many other diff's between the two types that can be discovered via a quick google or two :)

In looking at your tank specs, I wouldn't even bother with testing the water unless there is a real reason to. I think you'll be just fine :)

    Best wishes!

thanks so much. I did a google search and sure enough found alot of info. Counting the bars on the dorsal fin is impossible, but both have very thin almost not there black line surrounding the white bars, both have a higher dorsal and a lower one, they look the same. the only difference is that one is very tiny (juvanile) and the other one is much larger. both are of orange colouring just one is lighter (the bigger of the two) and the other is darker but it's face is light. I'd put my money on false not true percs.
