Well everyone, I did it. Yesterday I did my last two dives, took the final exam (94% XD), and I am not a certified PADI open water diver. (hopes this doesnt start a PADI vs NAUI vs...er anyone else battle). Anyways, I am trying to decide if I should take the AOW course as well while I am in Hawai'i. Basically I would get used to deeper dives with an instructer vs just doing them on my own...SCARY. What do you all think?

    Congrats.

Get out there and use it!

Nothing "scary" with right training, experience and equipment.

    Have fun & be safe.

I would go for the AOW it will give you more confidence and you can meet more people to dive with. Plus if you dive when you get home it will be easier to find a buddy when you have your AOW

Ya that is what I am thinking. I would feel bad to force my buddy to dive more shallow than he or she could...it would be awkward.

Anyone got tips on equipment. Lucky for me, C-Card = higher pay...YAY. So I can actually afford some decent stuff. Also, if anyone has any expierence with dive watches, I would love to know.

I personally say get your equpment from a local place so that you can have them service it every year. I think all my equipment came in around $1400 for the BC, regulators, dive computer and all the regular stuff. So not that expensive.

Most of the people I know who have bought equipment and then actually stayed with it and continued to dive for more than 5 years ended up buying twice. The first buy was for recreational gear. The second was better quality gear that could be used for tech diving. And, of course I did the same thing. I now dive with a backplate and wings two Zeagle flatheads, doubles, a spg, and led lights etc etc.
The important thing is to enjoy what you do, take it seriously (we haven't learned to breathe water yet) and get some experience under your belt before making major decisions about gear purchases and extraordinary dives. ;)
    Enjoy,
    Jim

PS and what the heck does XD mean anyway ;D
