I'm using two Hydor heaters as of this afternoon. Bought them at Petsmart. No more tingling!

Is there anything you can do to protect your tank from electricution. I assuming that it can crash your tank

yes, you can buy a grounding probe. reefgeek sells them for 10 bucks. this will ground the tank and protect you and your reef. I only got shocked after i pulled the heater out of the water, when i was no longer protected from my grounding probe.

More important than protecting the tank is protecting you. Make sure you are using a ground fault interrupt outlet. Using one of these outlets in combination with the grounding probe (or your hand) should detect the shock and cut off the current.

Wow I feel your pain. I was doing...something, I don't remember what, on my old 46 gallon. I had a hang-on heater. It was plugged in and fell into the tank. Obviously not submersible, it started getting BRIGHT RED really fast! It was scary!!!!!!

Like an IDIOT I plunged my hand into the water to grab it, because I was scared for my livestock. My whole arm was shocked, I screamed like a 4 year old girl (well...I guess I still do that), and was woozy for about 30 minutes. Not fun. The only fish in the water at the time survived, though. I would never recommend a hang-on heater ever again.

Annie, is your tank equipment plugged into a GFCI outlet?
