    The red blob abouve his head, or her, never got released. It just kept going in and out of the shell!

    Whenever a hermit is going in and out of it's shell, it's outgrowing it's shell. Make sure you provide it with a variety of slightly larger shells so it can "move". Unlike snails, they don't produce their own shells.....they just inhabit shells that other animals have made. That is why you'll sometimes see hermit crabs in a fight to the finish....they want the other ones shell.
