I hate the stuff as well, and am currently fighting it in my tank. I'm giving the cyano clean bacteria from korrallen zucht a try, combined with frequent water changes and siphoning it seems to be working! I'm on week three now I think, it says it may take 8 weeks to fully eradicate though

I'm not trying to hi-jack the thread but I have a related question. I don't have cyano (knock on wood) in my DT but it is showing up on the sand in my refugium (refugium is pretty new - about a month)....I'm thinking to let it go and not worry about getting rid of it because I've seen some let the algae grow in the refugium so that it won't show up in the DT. Any thoughts on this that the experts can provide?

As a last resort you can use erythromycin, which is the anti-bacterial active ingredient found in Maracyn, a fish medicine. 1/2 dose seems to knock out cyano within a few days. I have used it several times on multiple tanks, with no ill effects towards coral or the biological filtration. However I would only recommend this as a last resort, because normally cyano in the tank means something else is going on and you should try to figure it out before resulting to this method.

is chemi-clean truly safe for coral though? I'm having a cyano issue again now in my tan after adding the pistol shrimp. The guy dug up the dead in my sand and within days, BOOM!! cyano. I always fought my battles with it by siphoning and water changes. And testing phos with cyano present I found a waste of test kits because it always reads low from the algae consuming it at a rapid rate. After it's gone I start testing the water again.
