I'd rather get different components from companies that specialize in that component.

Skimmers and lights (as an example) are not the same skill set.

Eh, you got a somewhat of a good point, but if the light they make is good quality, if they make a protein skimmer, chances are they will make a good skimmer, not all things companies specialize in are even good.

In a way, Oceanic does this with their Biocube.
Some companies are better than others. Specialising makes them even better yet! :)

Specialization is the backbone of our economy. For one company to make all aquarium related products not only would they require tons of different machine shop systems to fabricate all these products, but they would also need the capital required to setup a corporation like this. However, what comes to mind for me is something that of a construction general contractor. What someone could do is start a company and subcontract out fabricators to make many different products (lighting, skimmers, filters, etc...) under similar specifications to have matching colors/logos/brands. However this is highly unlikely in a industry such as this. Interesting though....

if you're concerned about uniformity, just get a sump and you don't have to worry about anything matching up really. The only thing you see in my set-up is my pendant and my mp10 on the backwall, everything else, banished to the sump :). Aesthetically you will love a sump if you're concerned about things looking clean and tidy, just one of their many benefits.
