either do a fuge or instead of sand you could maybe do rock rubble or large crushed coral which will give you good bio filtration and still be easy to clean

Well, frag tanks definitely aren't natural either. This is an aquarium for the purpose of growing out frags in rows on white plastic racks, not a beautiful display like we have with our main aquariums.

regardless you still need filtration. if he has no sump he must do it all in the tank with a hang on back skimmer then by all means do it.....we cant all have the 5 star set up over night.

I understand that. You can run HOB equipment or even a HOB fuge. But IMO a frag tank should have some type of filtration other than water changes.

I'm just saying it's not about the looks.

Sorry I deleted that post. I realized after I posted that OP was talking about a frag tank. I would go bare bottom for sure on a frag tank.

this is like something i have been working on as well...i am putting together what i am calling a frag tank but heck it may actually be something different.

basically i have been building a 24x24x12 square tank (30gal). i have built the stand to hold it and have a 20L (yes i know the 20L is 30inches..built the stand accordingly) underneath that i have already added the partitions for to house a fuge/return/skimmer. the fuge portion of it is 14 inches out of the 30. I planned on having a 4inch sand bed in the fuge with some LR rubble in 1/2 of it. I also planned on having about 2" of sand in the "display" with a single large piece of relatively flat rock...having frags on racks and in sand throughout with only a CUC and possibly 1 fish in it. fuge will also grow macro algae that i can use for feeding in my Main tank

i only need to find my piece of rock for the display as well as a few other final touches before i continue further...including finishing the plumbing

is the sand in the "display" a bad idea?

some people have it and some people dont i dont see the difference other than the amount it has to be cleaned also if you want a specific shaped rock maybe look into making one

hey everybody. I set up the frag tank. The only 2 frags in it now.. is a green slimer frag and a spongodes frag. I am testing my leds. I decided to go bare bottom. Right now i just have about 10 pounds of rock in there and no sand or skimmer... I am working on a small hob. I just threw some cheato in the "display" for now and jammed it in between some rocks so it doesnt get stuck on my frags.. I know it does better spinning. It will spin in my hob. I had an extra marineland hob laying around so I am trying to turn that into a fuge.
