I have come to the conclusion that hydrometers are inconsistent! After using my coralife deep 6, an instant ocean, and a floating hydrometer which all gave me extremely different readings I want to invest in a refractometer. Any suggestions? Could I get a good one for around 50?

Yes, you can get one for about $50. Look on ebay or check Dr. Foster and Smith, that's where I got mine at for about $40.

I agree that a refractometer is the way to go, but I've been putting it off because I can get by knowing that my swing arm is consistently (verified several times with calibrated LFS refractometers) 2 points off. The hard part is making sure there are no bubbles and being consistent with measuring and bubble removal. ;)

I enjoy the house brand refractometer from marine depot but you can get the Sybon Refractometer for the same price from bigalsonline.com
