How do I remove this without hurting my coral? I had two different kinds, a purple flesh and a white flesh. The purple flesh has died and the crabs are removing it, but the white one still seems alive and I REALLY want to save it. It was one of my very first corals 5 years ago. It started as a 1" clipping.

    Its reasonably hardy is GSP

In fact I have some that survived for 3 weeks on rock that was only damp (not submerged)

    you could

    1) remove the rock, and use a new , babies soft toothbrush and a bowl of tank water and clean the rock with it
rinse in another bowl of tank water and return to DT

    2) you could isolate the rock and keep it in darkness in a covered bucket of tank water with a power head for circulation for 2 weeks or so until the algae dies off
it may take a day or 3 for the GSP to starrt coming out again after this treatment but IME the GSP will survive this treatment for longer than the algae would

Best way to eliminate gha is a series of water changes and time. Otherwise, as steve said, gsp is very hardy. I had some shipped to me, took 3 days and it was fine.

When I first tried to get the algae out of my tank, I did use a new tooth brush, but not a baby tooth brush, and scrubbed every rock just like that, but I was afraid to brush the coral. I did VERY gently, barely touching the GSP, and I thought that's why the purple skinned ones died.

I will try that and let you know how it goes.:) Thanks, I hope it works.

    +1

Whatever part of the coral that comes off from scrubbing is mostly likely not viable anyway.

O kay I did it. I was so scared. I brushed so softly, just enough to remove the junk. I have a home daycare so I actually have tons of baby soft tooth brushes on hand;D

It actually came out better than I thought it would. I thought all the flesh was just going to fall off, but I have some left. I did loose all my purple fleshed ones though.:-[

So now what? Lights, no lights for a while? Low flow, high flow? I'm sure I stressed it out.

Here's a pic of it now:

Mine GSP ( my entire back wall ) does better in an area of at least mod flow, mod lighting.

As Steve pointed out it could take several days to open up again. It is a hardy corals that can stay closed for longer periods and be just fine.

BTW good job, it looks mucho better. :)
