its depending on how much live rock u got in ur MD and the bio load
u better test ammonia and nitrite every couple days
if any trace of nh3/4 no2 so u should increase ur live rocks or decrease ur bio load

my guess is no, but how established is the tank? size of tank? amount of live rock? how often do you do water changes?

If you don't mind doing frequent water changes or dealing with algae. I have a 29 gallon with no skimmer. I don't have a power filter either. (I have a skimmer but it is too loud for the gf.) It does fine. I need to scrape algae a little more than I like.. I also have to do a 5 gal water change every week or two...

I only have 2 clowns and a couple of corals

Your wording sounds like you do have a protein skimmer in your tank. Do you?

I have a 29galllon reef (35g water volume when you include the sump) with a Hydor Nano Skim protein skimmer and a filter sock. No other filtration. I think this amount of filtration will work just fine if you only have a light bio-load.

What fish do you have in your tank?

Personally, I would ditch the internal filter. Mechanical filters trap detritus, which then breaks down into DOCs and causes nitrate issues.

I have a 29g with 3 fish and 7 coral. I have no skimmer or sump/fuge. I do have a HOB (Whisper 60) that I use for surface circulation and to hang media bags for chemical filtration. I currently only do 10% WC once per month and have no problem with nitrates or algae.
