I just got these today, but the LFS couldn't tell me the exact name. I am thinking the Shreck Green one is a Branching Montipora (??). The pink one they said was Seriatopora (aka Bird's Nest), but this does not look like any Bird's Nest I have seen. The tips are rounded and blunt, more like a Stylophora. I also got a combo piece with a green and purple species of Pocillopora on it. I plan on fragging these and wanted to make sure that I got the proper names when selling/trading.

Thank you! I wanted to study up on these creatures for placement, water movement, etc. Someone also said the second picture was Porites. I have looked up this and the Montipora and can't tell the difference. I was thinking it looked more like a Branching Monti, but either way I just want to find the right info for their health.

You know, now that you mention it, the second pic does look more like a porite than a monti.

What is the difference between the Porites and the Monti? I have seen online that Porites can live in a range of conditions (10-45 ft). I was wondering if anyone has experience with these and what placement and water movement would be best? Also, I read that they grow extremely slow. I already have friends wanting frags, but don't want to do that if they grow slow since I have a nice piece right now. Thanks for the help!

Well, it would take a marine biologist to give you all of the differences between the two but as far as I've been able to tell, porites have different looking polyps and the skeleton on the branching variety of porite seems to be alot more dense than a montipora is. That's just from my experience though. The denseness of the skeleton of the porite might be one reason why it grows slower than a monti. As for placement and water volume, I would treat it the same way that you would treat a branching monti.
