For some reason, i have to top off a few gallons every 3 days, and i have been good keeping track of how much FW and salt to mix to keep it in the 1.024 area, but in the last week i haven't had time cause of personal reasons, and i just topped off in one week about 10 gallons of FW, and this morning i found my favorite fish dead!!! I checked all the parameters, and the salt was at 1.019 and PH at 8.0 could this be the cause??
The rest of the fish look ok, eating well.. grrrrr

I don't want to get in an on-line arguement here. It's not in my nature nor do I think it's worth my time. You asked a question and I gave you my "blunt" answer. This one was too tuff to *****foot. It takes more than food and water testing to take care of your tank and girlfriend.;D missis is spelled mysis.

are you topping off with water mixed with salt? and your SG went from 1.024"area" to 1.019? That's not right, first off I hope I read it wrong!

    Questions,

5 gallons at one time is too much to top off because it means that when your tank evaporated that 5 gallons, the SG(salinity..Salt level) went up...... You should be topping off about a gallon a day depending on the size of the tank and lighting and tank temp. there's a whole host of reasons why it evaporates..

Is this a Fish only tank?

Are you mixing top off water with salt?(you do know that water evaporates, salt doesn't)

Where do you get your top off water from?

There's too much going on in your post to give any kind of suggestions on how to fix it. You've got to give more info. Like this

    Tank Size____
    SG_____
    pH_____

etc.......know what I mean? put all the things you know we're gonna ask...:)

Also, twice a day is way too much to feed. What are your nitrates and Ammonia at?

This is kinda like going to the Dr. He has all his notes from previous visits and he looks at that to make a diagnosis along with your current info. If he didn't have all the info he couldn't tell you what's wrong with you.

    Yup...+1 Mission.

I thought Mission was generous with his comments as he also said "sorry for your loss" and awarded Karma.

Other salt sites Im on wouldnt be as nice as this one.

Shake it off. Live and learn.
