I saw one of those basslets take out a cleaner at my lfs. The shrimp was sitting on a rock, and then the basslet hit it and took a big chunk out of its side. He then pulled it into a little hole behind a rock, apparently saving it for "later." My money is on him!

The basslet put it there and the head by the nem, trying to throw you off the trail.

Or in hopes that they would eat what he didn't want to hide the evidence. Had the nem eaten and then regurgitated the shrimp, the remains would've been pale- almost colorless (I know from experience, unfortunately).

If it makes you feel any better, I also mysteriously lost a cleaner shrimp a few months ago. Came home to find what I thought was a molt in the mouth of my orange fungia; turns out it was the actual shrimp! Still have no idea what happened...

Hmm, I see a pattern. Corals or nems don't like cleaner shrimp. That's a pricey dinner. Hopefully the coral explodes in growth.

FTR, the natural coral reef is not the peaceful haven we try to recreate in our tanks. In reality, it's one of the most hostile environments on the planet, where some creatures have resorted to reproducing in vast numbers and/or by multiple means to insure survival of their species. :)

Has this crime been solved, or is it still under investigation? :D
