Not sure if that is possible. Something like that might work if you can figure out where to cut it. I know my filter socks plug up about every 4-5 days and have to be changed out.

I keep an extra set. when they start to plug up I pull them out and put the new ones in. Then take the dirty ones and throw them in the washing machine NO soap and wash. Then I have a clean set to use next time.

Your filter my not plug as fast. I would keep an eye on it to tell how long before it would plug

Maybe you can rig something so it's not as visible. A specimen container (ex. What the LFS put your fish in after they catch them out of the display tank). You could drill holes in it and paint it black with krylon fusion (reef safe).

Then hang it over the side
inside the tank, put the sock in it and have the skimmer drain into it.

ummm, i saw the pics and you (by you i mean the skimmer!) seem to be producing very watery dilute skimmate. i believe this is due to the fact that the filter sock did indeed create back pressure. ok, the problem is this, @ night or if one day u forget to empty the skimmate cup its going to overflow and go all over ur floor, also ure going to be removing alot of water from ur tank due to the excessively dilute skimmate. what if instead of the sock, u hung a speciment comtainer under the output from skimmer with some baffles glued in it? just my .02 worth

I'm going with build a small refugium/sump, just big enough for the skimmer to sit down there have a small refugium which is beneficial and add a couple bubble traps and your set, I would say use a 10gal tank and turn it into sump the most expensive part is a return pump and it doesnt have to be large since its mainly for the skimmer and the bubble trap, my .002
