    The frag that is sitting on the sand appears to have some dead tissue.

    Take it out and smell it, if its dead you will know, and that's not to say all the polyps are gone.

    I think a lot of it is dead, can i break off the living part of the frag?

    Its better to remove the dead stuff, and try not to monkey with the survivors.
